How We Personalized Our New Bathroom

Mis à jour : 20 avril 2019

As you know, we recently moved into a new place and hopefully you’ve already seen my walk-in closet reveal here. Since we’re renting, reconfiguring the space and remodeling the bathroom was not an option. However, I’m excited to share in this post how we personalized the space with a few accessories and a bit of imagination.

I personally spend a lot of time in the bathroom, so naturally it needed to be functional but also nice and enjoyable. Whether I’m getting ready for the day or ending one with a relaxing bubble bath, I love to take my time in the bathroom and enjoy every minute of that very personal time. Making this room inviting and warm was essential.

Since the bathtub is one of the first things you see when entering our bathroom, I wanted it to look impressive. We accessorized the surrounding surfaces with unscented pillar candles of different sizes, a DIY-made wood tray, and luxury bath essentials at hands reach.

The ivory candles are from 100 Candles. I wanted them to be of different sizes, so they would look more interesting together, and help create a spa-like ambiance. Not only do they look great, they’re also very reasonable in terms of pricing.

Due to our bathtub being very wide, we couldn't find a wood tray that fit. That's why we decided to make one ourselves. We were able to find all the products we needed at The Home Depot for less than $50. The tray is great to put on some of the luxury bath products from the Gilchrist & Soames' London Collection. Also, while bathing, it's very practical as it makes the perfect surface for a glass of wine and a book.

Ken also had the great idea to install two floating shelves above the tub. He was inspired by the Viroth Hotel in Siem Reap, Cambodia; a fabulous luxury boutique hotel we stayed at a few years ago.

The shelves are from IKEA. Painting them in the same color of the walls (and a little painter’s caulk) created a custom built-in feel.

We also decided to feature a few meaningful souvenirs we acquired while living and traveling in Asia, to give our bathroom a Zen-like feel. Deciding to group these items together made each piece have more impact and focus, not to mention provide fond memories of our travels. For example, the Chinese calligraphy brushes were purchased at different weekend markets throughout Hong Kong and the hand carved wooden Buddha head was purchased at a gallery during a Christmas holiday in Cambodia.

Having a double vanity, we decided to elevate this area with a simple yet elegant white orchid and a tray of bathroom essentials . The great thing about orchids is they don’t need much natural light and they thrive in humidity, which makes them the perfect flowering plant for bathrooms without a window, like ours. The rattan tray and tissue box cover from Crate & Barrel and the glass apothecary jars from Restoration Hardware, help make our frequently used products, like our Gilchrist & Soames hand wash and lotion, cotton pads and ear swabs handy while still looking great for visiting guests.
